How Vitamin C Benefits Your Skin

Vitamin C is an essensial vitamin for maintaining  a healthy body and youthful skin.  Since the body cannot synthesize Vitamin C one must rely on dietary intake for adequate amounts of this vitamin. Vitamin C can be found in foods like citrus fruits and dark leafy green vegetables.  Unfortunately, diet alone (even when adding Vitamin C supplements) cannot supply optimal amounts of Vitamin C to protect your skin from aging free radical damage from the environment.

Creating a Vitamin C reservoir in your skin helps to protect it from free radical damage caused by the sun’s UV rays, cigarette smoking and pollutants.  It is also involved in collagen synthesis which is important for keeping skin strong, firm and well toned. Plus, Vitamin C has been shown to improve skin’s texture, reduce brown spots, decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and helps prevent the formation of new ones.

Vitamin E is also an important antioxidant when it comes to anti-aging of the skin because it is oil soluble.  This means it is effective in protecting the oil dominant membranes of skin cells, keeping them alive and functioning optimally.  When Vitamin C is mixed with Vitamin E it helps to recycle Vitamin E so it can stay protecting your skin longer. An ideal serum should be formulated to contain both Vitamins C and E.

Choosing the right formula of Vitamin C is critical.  L-ascorbic Acid is the Vitamin C that has been researched as the active chemical that can be absorbed by the skin and offers antioxidant protection.  Unfortunately L-Ascorbic Acid is very unstable and tends to break down immediately, sometimes right in the bottle.  Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is an ester version of L-Ascorbic Acid which is much more stable.  Once Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is applied to the skin it then converts to L-Ascorbic Acid.  This makes it possible to create a time released Vitamin C that is more stable and less irritating.  Vitamin C formulas which are based solely on L-Ascorbic Acid are not only unstable but can cause skin reactions on sensitive skin. If you have one of these products at home you may have noticed the color getting darker or orangier soon after opening the bottle.  This means your Vitamin C product is breaking down.  This can also be a problem if your Vitamin C Serum is packaged improperly.  If it’s packaged in a clear bottle, in which light can easily penetrate, your product will break down faster.  Sometimes, within just a couple weeks after opening your product can become rancid. That’s pretty disturbing when you’ve paid $60.00 or more for your serum. Also, the pH of the product should be about 3.0, any lower will cause skin irritations and if the pH is too high the product will be ineffective.  At Elizabeth Renee Esthetics you can trust that your serum will be formulated using the optimal pH level, the right concentration, proper packaging and the best type of Vitamin C to for your skin.

Since the skin receives the most intense assault from UV damage from the sun, Vitamin C should be applied in the morning. However, if you apply it regularly you will build up an optimal reservoir in your skin to give you round the clock protection.  Note: if you stop using C & E Antioxidant Serum your reservoir of Vitamin C will deplete in about three days.

C & E Antioxidant Serum is Elizabeth Renee Esthetics’ best selling serum.  Even though we’ve offered this serum for many years it still maintains it’s top popularity.  That’s because it works!  Ours is a wonderful, no-sting formula with packaging that is light resistant and uses an airless pump to further preserve it’s freshness.  This stable version of Vitamin C also has the added benefit of discouraging blackhead formation making it the perfect choice for skin which is easily clogged.  It also helps to fade old blemish marks as it brightens the pigmentation.

Since research shows oral amounts of Vitamin C is inadequate for protecting the skin I strongly recommend that if it comes down to choosing just one anti-aging product to defend your skin against free radical damage it should definitely be our C & E Antioxidant Serum.  With regular use you will see a decrease in skin discolorations, improved skin tone, a decrease in the appearance of fine lines and a wonderfully youthful looking complexion that will last for years to come.
